Flygande

Picture

“For a period, my daughter drew a large number of flying characters – horses, unicorns, butterflies and airplanes, but also children. From time to time I have returned to her old drawings, and thought that sometime in the future I want to create a performance where her drawings can come to life, a performance based on dance, music and animations of drawings made by children – where a drawing of a child with a balloon can begin to fly.”

Flygande (english: flying) is a result of a close co-production between Li Taiga and Jukka Korpi . The dynamic duo representing different linguistic minorities, art fields, genders, and generations created in 2025 an interdisciplinary performing arts production aimed at audiences from aged 3 and up. Flygande is a performance that, through the expressions of dance, music and image, creates choreographic, musical and visual narratives intended to appeal to a broad audience. The choreography draws inspiration from the aesthetics of children’s drawings – perhaps not so clinical, but still very carefully crafted in its own distinctive way. The overall theme of the performance is flying, which can evoke associations ranging from flying animals and machines to personal development, the wings of imagination and a longing for freedom. The music for the production was made by musician/composer Daniela Dahl.

The work process included a one-month-residency at the Art Association Jakarte in Jakobstad, Finland where we had the opportunity to deepen our work, and thanks to the Swedish Cultural Foundation, we were able to meet our target audiences in local schools and hold workshops. The work process was followed by a two-week-long residency in Handenterminalen Konst in Stockholm, and a residency period at ZebraDans in Stockholm before the work premiered at Zebra Dans on 29 Nov 2025. The work was also shown at Folk och Kultur in Eskilstuna in February 2026.
